We've spent years obsessing over moss, making (all) the terrarium moss mistakes, so you don't have to.
Dried/dormant moss can be stored in a dark, dry area for weeks at a time. Though we recommend you take the moss out of the sealed bag to prevent mold, and make sure it's completely dry if you plan on leaving it a while before use.
For best results, it’s always a good idea to use your moss sooner rather than later.
All you need to do is leave your moss to soak in water for 30 minutes and squeeze out the excess moisture. It’ll come out looking extra green and fresh!
Absolutely! The added contrast in textures and colors can really bring extra life to a terrarium. Though different moss species have slightly different care requirements, there's typically a lot of overlap. All of the terrarium moss varieties we stock can be planted together.
Watering terrarium moss is more of an exercise in hydrating the system, rather than the moss itself. It doesn't operate on a schedule, so try to mist when the soil and/or plants are looking a bit dry.
This moss is organic, so you can be sure it’s harvested from a pesticide and fungicide free area. However it is still from a natural, and therefore non-sterile, environment. Many vivarium pet experts use sterile cultured moss instead to make sure there’s nothing unwanted/harmful brought in on the moss.
Both tropical and temperate mosses can thrive in in closed terrariums. Aquatic mosses can work well too, provided you can provide those high humidity levels.
Sure, it's not really adapted to growing on surfaces, so it has a bit of a haphazard growth pattern, but it can be done. The dried sphagnum moss we sell sometimes has fibers come back to life, so you may see them in action.
