Hypnum Moss is our favorite sheet moss to work with. It forms a satisfyingly thick forest-green carpet that holds together nicely, making it super easy to work with. Perfect for creating that natural woodland look.
*Please note, the product images showing the hydrating process is a slightly different species Hypnum cupressiforme, whereas we're currently selling (the slightly more feathery) Hypnum imponens.
In this form, our moss is much more shelf-stable. All you need to do is soak your moss in water before use, and it’ll spring back to life!

While the greatest care is taken to remove bugs from the moss, it is harvested from natural areas. So we can’t guarantee there won’t be any critters hitching a ride. This is totally normal, and the re-hydrating process should wash any off prior to adding to your terrarium.

How do you care for Hypnum Moss?

How do you use sheet moss?
Sheet moss can be laid out in large (ahem, sheets). Or, for faster growth/ground coverage, it can be cut up into much smaller pieces and placed evenly around the space.
Do I need to use the moss right away?
Though dormant moss can be stored in a dark, dry area for months, we recommend only doing this if it is completely dried. Make sure you remove it from the sealed bag to prevent mold, too. For best results, it’s always a good idea to use your moss sooner rather than later.
How to hydrate dried/dormant moss?
It’s a simple process! All you need to do is leave your moss to soak in water for 30 minutes and squeeze out the excess moisture. It’ll come out looking extra green and fresh.
Is this moss safe for use in reptile/amphibian enclosures?
This moss is organic, so you can be sure it’s harvested from a pesticide and fungicide free area. However it is still from a natural, and therefore non-sterile, environment. Many vivarium pet experts use sterile cultured moss instead to make sure there’s nothing unwanted/harmful brought in on the moss.
