How thick does the charcoal layer need to be?
There’s no hard and fast rule for how thick a charcoal layer needs to be. Activated charcoal is powerful stuff, so even a thin layer can effectively perform its filtration function. A good rule of thumb is 1/3 of an inch (or even less).
What makes activated charcoal “activated”?
Activated charcoal (also known as “activated carbon”) has undergone a heat processing treatment to greatly expand its porosity and binding capacity. Check out our handy guide, Activated Charcoal for Terrariums for more info.
Does terrarium charcoal have to be activated charcoal?
Activated charcoal is far and away the best material for the detoxifying job. Its binding capacities are much higher than that of other charcoal types, so it’s able to bind more toxins and stay active for longer.
Will activated charcoal prevent mold in a terrarium?
There is plenty of anecdotal evidence that activated charcoal can help keep mold at bay, but as its effects are difficult to quantify, we recommend adding a springtail culture too.
What are the terrarium layers, what order do they go in?
Is this material safe for amphibians/reptiles?
It depends on the pet. The chunkier particles, if ingested, could be unsuitable for some reptiles and amphibians at risk of impaction. Always do extensive research into your chosen terrarium pet and its needs before buying.
