Pumice (Coarse Grade)
Pumice is a fantastic material for terrarium substrates. With its low weight and high porosity, it's one of our favorite ways to add additional structure, drainage, and aeration.
Key Benefits
Give your substrate a pumice boost
The high porosity of pumice improves soil aeration and drainage, making for healthier roots and happier plants.
For a (volcanic) rock, pumice is surprisingly water retentive. Helping to boost those all-important tropical conditions and keep your plants happy.
Pumice binds to available nutrients, and can release them slowly over time - providing stable fertilization support.

How much pumice should I include in my substrate mix?
When adding additional soil amendments to a substrate, we typically recommend they make up around 10% of the overall mix. That way you get the additional benefits without upsetting the overall balance.
Can you use pumice in drainage layers?
Though we typically recommend leca for this job, pumice can absolutely still work well. It's well suited to being a strong and absorbent foundation for a terrarium.
